The Partners

(Observed from sandy Hook on Cultus Bay, Whidbey Island)

 

With a flash of feathers,

a hawk

flew through the trees,

sailed in the air

on his trapeze,

a small mouse held in its talons—

swaying,

with each wing beat,

as in a kind of choreography —

a captive partner

in an aerial performance

 with no net.
