Early Spring Trees

First, a subtle increase in density

The body takes on weight

New shoots in mauve or beige

Appear on barren limbs

Begin to swell

With pastel tints and tones

Of chartreuse or rose

Slowly, silently a loveliness

Fills winter’s empty spaces

In each deciduous tree

Like wine in a chalice

And I drink, like Alice,

suddenly entwined

In a wonderland

Of trees blooming

Like great bouquets

Of flowers in Spring time.
