City Reflections - Quan Yin*

I once took tea

at a glass-topped table

still as a forest pool.

And gazing down

within its depths

I saw a tree

and sky

and floating clouds.

Birds on the wing

flew far beneath me,

far beyond

black branches trembling

without touching

the clear surface

of the table,

but spreading ripples

deep within my soul.

*Quan Yin, a famous Bodhisattva, is also the name of a small tea shop in Seattle.
